Diane Feissel was the artist chosen for the February/March 2013 Artist Spotlight in Professional Artist magazine. Here’s an excerpt from the piece, written by Kim Hall: Diane Feissel’s figurative paintings are laced with a subtle psychological intrigue, igniting tension between the viewer and the subject. Classically trained as a dancer in addition to studying the visual arts during and after college, Feissel says people are often surprised to see that she rarely includes her subjects’ full bodies in her works, since she has a love for dance and the movement of the body. Feissel does believe, however, that her dance background made her more sensitive to conveying a deep, resonating, emotional quality through her paintings, just as the best dancers go behind technical prowess and tap into powerful, sensitive emotions when they perform. In other words, Feissel explores the inner world of her subjects rather than their mere external, physical beings. Primarily painting people she knows aids in this process.
