Toby Penney was Professional Artist’s October/November 2013 Artist Spotlight subject. She says doesn’t mind if someone calls her artwork “haunting” or “creepy.” In fact, it can be quite amusing to the artist. “My paintings have so much color in them. I giggle at something that can be so bright and ‘creepy’ at the same time,” the 37-year-old artist said from her Fayetteville, Tenn., studio. Penney doesn’t intend to make viewers uneasy, but she does want her work to elicit a response. “I would be wasting the viewer’s time if I didn’t give them something to think about or feel,” she said. Her art isn’t for everybody and that’s how it should be, she says. “You have to keep making work that does what you want it to do for you.” For more on Toby Penney, visit www.tobypenney.com, www.facebook.com/TobyPenneyArt or follow her on twitter @TobyPenney.
