In Shawn Pagels’ latest work, he intentionally obscures pre-conceived ideas of subject and replaces them with rhythmic bands of shifting hues, color and line. Pagles is very much still interested in the formal qualities of hi work; beauty is the objective. He simply wants the viewer to enjoy the visual experience and allow the subject matter, which is always nature, to not dominate the sensual intake of his paintings.
“When I am out in nature, I try hard not to think of my work and simply enjoy the soft surroundings. The scent of the earth and sound of water bring me back to a peaceful state. With my art, I hope there is the same kind of response. I want the viewer to walk away from my paintings feeling better than before,” Pagels said.
