Doris Carstens creates her beads out of polymer clay using her version of the Italian Millefiori technique. Coming from the jewelry trade, she unites the beads with semi precious stones and sweet water pearls. As learned in the “old school,” Carstens places a knot between every bead when she strings her necklaces.

Carstens was born in Austria into a family of artists. After earning her degree as a gold and silversmith, which was the family trade, she moved to Capetown, South Africa, to practice her skills. In 1989 Carstens arrived in the U.S. and started her career in Miami as a freelance artist and jeweler. In 2003, Carstens’ family decided to move out of the “big city” and raise two children in a smaller community in Southwest Florida.
